Rum Cake Recipe
If you like cake and enjoy the taste of rum you will love this cake recipe. It is one of my favorite desserts to make anytime of year. I've heard that this cake gets better with age but I really wouldn't know as it usually all goes the first day after making it.
This is not an original recipe. I found this at my local liquor store. They always have recipe cards that are free for the taking on the counter. It is actually a Bacardi Rum Cake, but I've found that you can use any golden to dark rum that you prefer.

I bet you can't eat just one slice
Ingredients For Rum Cake
- 1 cup of chopped pecans (You can use walnuts or omit the nuts all together)
- 1 yellow cake mix such as Duncan Hines
- 1 package of instant vanilla pudding
- 4 eggs
- 1/2 cup of rum (golden to dark works best)
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of vegetable oil
To Start
Preheat your oven to 325°F. Grease and flour a bundt pan. If you are using nuts, sprinkle them in the bottom of a tube or bundt pan.
Making The Batter
In a large mixing bowl stir and mix yellow cake mix together with eggs and instant pudding . Add oil, water and rum. With an electric mixer on low speed beat until well mixed. Beat on high speed for two minutes. Pour the batter mixture into the bundt pan and bake for one hour. If your oven cooks a bit faster or slower, it's always best to check the cake with a toothpick to make sure it is cooked. Remove from oven and cool for at least 15 minutes. Turn onto a plate or serving dish.
Making The Glaze
In a saucepan melt the butter and stir in water, rum and sugar. Boil for approximately 5 minutes stirring constantly. Gently prick the top of the cake with a toothpick and spoon the glaze mixture over the cake. Let the glaze absorb into the cake and then repeat until all glaze is used.
Glaze For Rum Cake
Ingredients
- 3 TBS butter
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup of rum
- 1/2 cup of sugar

Susan - this is my moms favorite cake - and I'm going to try to make one for her:) lol. If I don't get it right I'll try to go buy one but heck I'll try because shed be so happy:)
I'll take a photo no matter what just for fun! Haha
Up and even beautiful!
Oh Rum Cake - One of my favorites! And this one looks so easy to make. Did you know that you can cool the cake for 30 minutes or so and pour the glaze into the original pan, then put the cake back in the pan to soak up the glaze? It works great for me.
Susan...
I actually like rum and enjoy the taste of cake. Still...I think the recipe will still soothe me...that's what I like to call getting drunk on eatables..."soothe"
Thanks!
Thomas
Looks great Susan, and the best thing it looks really easy to make, even for a man! Voted up awesome and dugg :)
Hey Susan, I'm not much of a rum drinker to begin with, but your recipe for Rum Cake looks and sounds delicious. :) Voted up! :)
I love rum cake. It's different from mine but looks great non-the-less.
My sister makes Rum cake. I don't think she uses pudding. Thanks for sharing your recipe. Sounds great!
R9139, Nice to meet you. That's a shame that you've never seen instant vanilla pudding. Where are you from?
RH, Hope that you've gotten that oven thermometer, I think it would really help. Let me know how the cake turns out.
Austinstar, I've never thought of doing this. Great tip. Thanks, next time I make this I will do the glaze in the original pan. Saves washing a pot :)
YUM. Makes me want to bake-today! This shall go on my list of things to do. Thanks for the easy recipe.
Rum and cake should always go together :)
Gotta make my family finish the rice krispies I made over the weekend to indulge in another desert.
voted up as useful.
Thanks, Susan!
Thomas, Rum Balls, Rum Cake, Hot Buttered Rum, I'll see what else I can come up with just for you.
Brian, Yes it's pretty easy to make and comes out so moist. Think I may have to go and make another one this week. Thanks.
I will make sure to try that one, it sounds easy and I hope it is that easy. I like rum cake after having tasted it this past Christmas. Where do I found rum? At the grocery store? Will I have to buy a whole bottle or are there lesser packages? I may do a blog about it when I get ready just to let you know how it goes.
did you say a whole cup of rum? LOL great share Susan :) Frank
Love rum cake, rum raisin ice cream, rum sauce on breading pudding, rum balls....you get the picture. I have a couple of family gathering coming up soon and I will definitely use your recipe for this cake. Yummy.
Susan you got my mouth watering with this one, especially since today is my birthday and a cake is in order. I seldom if ever buy alcohol so I was wondering.
I can purchase Rum essence in the baking department of my grocery store how would this work as a substitute?
Rum is my favourite drink so I always have a bottle in. I have never made a rum cake but theres always a first time.
This looks yummy and easy
Thank you for sharing
It's a lovely Recipe. I wonder what goes with it... Custard or ice cream?
I love it.
This looks good. I have never tasted a rum cake. I bet your house smells heavenly with all that cooking..Thank's for another great recipe..
Cags, Always appreciate you coming by to read and comment. Thanks.
Cardisa, You know how I like rum :) I bet yours is good too. Do you have a hub on how you make yours?
Rebecca, This rum cake was the first I'd ever had. I would love to try other ones.
Brenda, Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Ruchira, I wish desserts would last longer in my house. I make something and poof its gone usually that same day. Sometimes though I hide stuff so that it doesn't go so fast.
I wish there was a delicious button for voting up! I love rum cake and sadly - like any dessert at my house - it vanishes practically before your eyes. I am excited to try this recipe. Especially since my hubby is recuperating from surgery, this should lift his spirits (and mine... LOL!)
Scratch my last comment, I tried this tonight and it worked great, :)
Susan...my family will indulge the first day when it's made. Then, I have to bribe them to finish it so that I can make something else...
Right now...something else is this yummy cake recipe. I might let go of the rum 'cause of the kid.
Thanks!
donna, I buy my rum at a liquor store, as in Canada it's the only place we can purchase it. A small bottle or a mickey of rum would be enough to make this cake. Please let me know how it goes.
Frank, LOL yes a whole cup of rum. Thanks :)
Dee, Rum all around :) Hope you enjoy this.
Dave, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I'm not sure that rum essence would work as this recipe calls for a cup of rum in total. You mean rum essence like vanilla extract?
Rosemay, Very yummy and easy to make. If you make it please let me know what you think.
Lady_E, I like it all by itself.
Ruby, If you like rum and cake, I think you'll like this cake.
Steph, Disappears quickly here too. Sometimes I think they've never had dessert before :) Hope that your hubby heals quickly.
Yummmm. I gotta try this and also the chocolate lava cake you have listed above. Thanks.
First of all - YUM!
This looks and sounds like a pretty easy recipe. I'll have to give it a try REAL soon! I like glazes and this one sure is tempting! I'll probably try it with walnuts and then I'll just have to make it AGAIN and try pecans. (excuses excuses) Thank you for sparking my sweet tooth to crave :)
Always a fan, Marisa / MissOlive
I have a friend who has been asking me to make her a Jamaican Rum Cake...Is this the same thing... Regardless it looks delicious!
I don't think the rum would make it into the cake if I was cooking...
alekhouse, Hope that you enjoy this cake and yes the chocolate lava cake I too want to try.
Marisa, Most of the time I make this cake with walnuts, only because I usually have them on hand. But I do like pecans. Hope that you enjoy this cake as much we do.
Lindiesl, I make this cake with Jamaican Rum but I don't think it is the same as an authentic Jamaican Rum Cake.
Red, I know what you mean :)
If I can find instant pudding in the house I am having this tonight! Thank you. I know there is rum here pushed back somewhere and has been for ten years I bet, I guess it is still good, lol.
Jackie, Please let me know if you liked the cake.
I made it (using walnuts) and it is delicious. I have to share it with someone tomorrow before I gain 5 pounds!
Jackie, Thank you so much for coming back to let me know. So glad you enjoyed it.
For about 15 years I have done this exact rum cake, but in its chocolate version. All ingredients are the same except for the yellow cake mix and vanilla pudding, which I substitute with chocolate cake mix and chocolate pudding. I don’t add nuts either. You are right, it is absolutely delicious! I find chocolate and rum go very well together and I reckon your vanilla version should taste as good as that.
Claudia, I will have to try this chocolate version of this cake. Thank you.
I love this cake. It sound delicious and I can't wait to make it soon. Thank you very much. Rated up!
Prasetio
Prasetio, Hope that you enjoy this cake as much as I do. Thank you, always nice to see you.
This sounds delicious I have never had Rum Cake before but I do like cake and I do like a bit of Rum, so I shall be looking forward to sampling this duo as one, thanks and voted up!
Mark, Hope you enjoy the cake and thanks for stopping by.
mmmm...I remember wanting someone to make this cake and then give me half.
Thomas
Great hub and I give you thumbs up because selfishly, it's the same recipe I make. We love rum cake! I've been entertaining the idea of using an Australian wine in place of the rum that's called Golden Tango Cream. The problem with rum cake is that you can eat it and eat it and eat it. It's great for the holidays!
Love this! This will make a great birthday gift for a friend of mine, I will be making this on Saturday! Thanks :)
Reading your hub make me want to start baking :) Thanks for this recipe.
A former co-worker used to make rum cakes. I think I could get tipsy just by the smell - it was so strong! But it was really good.
Thomas, I'll send you 1/2 of what's left next time I make it :)
ytsenoh, If you do make it with the Australian wine please let me know how it turned out. I've too thought about adding different liquors to make this cake but I like the rum flavor so much.
roxanne, I never thought of making this cake as a gift. Great idea! Thanks.
cebutouristspot, You're welcome, and I hope that you enjoy it.
HawaiiHeart, I especially like fruit cake that has been doused in rum for 2 months prior to eating it :)
Susan and RUM cake...yes...half of WHATEVER is left...hmmm... I'd better go to Canada to get it my own-self.
Thomas, I'll let you know the next time I make it and you can come on up :)
I am a big fan of Rum... So would it be wrong to say... "You had me at Rum!" However, oddly as it may seems, as I was reading through this, I realized I don't own a bundt cake. Seriously - with all the baking I do. I guess I will have to go get one now! :)
Easy and tasty...like alot!
I love Rum Cake. My late uncle would make a fantastic rum cake. I never got the recipe, unfortunately. I'll have to try yours. It looks easy and delicious, everything I require of a recipe! Thanks for giving us your find.
barbergirl, I think I only use my bundt pan for this recipe. I know I've had the pan forever and can't remember why I originally bought it. Hope you enjoy the cake :)
Audra, Thanks :)
Cyndi, Thanks for stopping by and hope you enjoy the recipe.

That looks really good, although every time I have tried to make something like this it always turned into an extra crispy dog chew. I just can't bake anything!
It's a shame I would love to give this one a go but I don't think i have ever seen vanilla pudding here
