Leonberger Dog Breed Price Range In Ontario Canada
73History
The Leonberger is a breed that goes back to the middle 1800’s when Heinrich Essig a city councilor in Leonberg Germany wanted a dog resembling a lion. He crossed a Saint Bernard with a Newfoundland Landseer then later introduced into the breeding a Great Pyrenean Mountain Dog. The Leonberger emerged with the qualities of the 3 breeds that it came from which are as follows; tracking, strength and loyalty from the Saint Bernard, swimming from the Newfoundland dog and the hearing and sight from the Pyrenean.
Characteristics
Often referred to as Leos, this beautiful breed is a very large dog. The females stand 26 – 29 inches and weigh over 100 pounds. Males are 28 – 31 inches and weigh 140 pounds. These are average measurement and weights. The male can hit over 180 pounds. Males will have a thick mane making it look lion-like. The double coats on these dogs are waterproof and their feet are webbed in between the toes making swimming for this giant breed easy. This breed makes an excellent water rescue dog and is used quite extensively by German and Italian Search and Rescue teams. They love to work and because they are very agile running is no problem for this breed. For a family dog they are great companions, wonderful with children and get along well with other pets.
Temperament
This breed is friendly, loving, devoted, protective and even-tempered. They adapt quite well to noise where some other breeds would find this stressful.
Other Things About The Leonberger
The Leonberger is a highly intelligent breed and can be trained to do draft work, carting, diving, tracking, herding, therapy work and more.
Life expectancy of this breed is 8 –10 years but can live longer.
They do not drool as they have tight flews.
Grooming should be done at minimum of once per week as with their thick undercoat the fur is prone to matt and knot.
The price that one can expect to pay for this breed of dog will vary depending on the breeder however price range is anywhere from $1600.00 U.S. dollars and up.
Adorable Puppies
I worked for a woman in Ontario at Orovale Kennels that is a Leonberger breeder and a Newfoundland dog breeder. Her dogs are gorgeous and she has had and still shows Champions in both breeds. In my opinion these dogs are wonderful!
The pictures to the right are some shots of part of a litter of Leonbergers and a litter of Newfoundland dogs that I shot while working at Orovale Kennels.

Lovely dogs! Good hub!
Wow Great Niche Hub! I love the Leonberger dog breed.
I thought I had a giant dog breed (Kuvasz). When I looked at 4 Leonberger puppies of 11 months, I was utterly astonished at their massive sizes and gentleness. Nice hub.
