What Is A Hummel
Hummels are porcelain figurines that are hand-made in Germany. Franz Goebel made the first Hummel in 1935. After seeing postcards drawn by artist Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, Franz Goebel approached her and told her that he would be interested in using her pictures to produce figurines. As soon as Hummels were introduced they became quite popular.
In 2009 Manufaktur Rödental bought the rights and facilities to keep the Hummel going after hearing in 2008, that Goeblel was going to stop making the Hummel collection.
Berta Hummel The Artist
Berta Hummel, born in 1909 in Bavaria, was a religious person and entered the Convent of Siessen. After graduating in 1931 she took the name Sister Maria Innocentia.

My Hummels
My grandmother had an amazing collection of these beautiful doll like figurines displayed on her fireplace mantle. She cherished each and every one of them, and we were always told you can look but don't touch. From the time that I was a little girl I've always loved them. My collecting of Hummels started about twenty years ago, when I received from my mother in law my first one called Zum Festtag On Holiday. Translated this means for the feast.
How to Identify an Authentic Hummel
On the bottom of the Hummel you will see as shown in the picture identifying marks such as Goebel Germany, a small bumblebee, a signature (beside the bumblebee is the signature), trademark, and a stamped number. There are different types of marking on the Hummels which will coincide to the year that it was made.

In 1971 the first of many Hummel plates were made. The plate that I have pictured here is from 1995, and was purchased right in Germany.

Hummels should be dusted with care. Use a soft blush brush or a soft cloth when dusting. When washing use a mild detergent. I keep mine behind a glass enclosed china cabinet and out of harms way.

Collectors take a lot of different things into consideration when pricing a Hummel.

My mother-in-law, who was of German descent, introduced me to Hummels years ago as she was very fond of them. Over the years I've enjoyed collecting them, too. My best find was a Hummel lamp that I found at a yard sale for $25. I'm not sure that they have much monetary value now, but I do enjoy the beautifully painted figurines and the typical bits of life that they depict. Nice article - voted up!
Never seen or heard of these before Susan. I wonder were they just exported for the American market? It often amazes me just what people will collect these days, I suppose it has to do with history and the factories they were made in and it has spread from there. Nicely put together, voted up and shared.

RH, I've found a few in antique shops but have never purchased one from them. The last time I was in Florida I came across one that I really liked but the price tag at $250.00 scared me off :)

Hello Susan. I have four Hummel wall hand woven tapestry. I purchased them at an estate auction. They are the four Hummel children swinging in swings, two boys, two girls. I really love them. I enjoyed learning the history surrounding them..Thank you..

Nice tribute to the Hummel. I've seen and heard of them, but never knew anyone who collected them. I collect Cherished Teddies. I have a curio cabinet filled with them.

My own mother got me started collecting these in the 80s. I eventually sold all the figurines except the 50th anniversary one. I still have a few of the plates from the 80s, Umbrella Girl and Boy, etc.

Susan - I have seen those before but I had no idea they were actually a collectible item. I love the history and I am so glad you put the photo of the plate and how you can tell if it is authentic. I like going to antique stores to shop for fun - I will enjoy seeing if I can find one!
