Family Christmas Gift Ideas-Board Games

By Just Ask Susan

One of my most favorite things at Christmastime to do is to sit around the dining room table and play board games. We usually play after having our big Christmas meal once everything is cleaned up and put away. This year I’ve noticed there are a few games that I’ve never heard of before and am dying to play.

Smart Ass

The name itself intrigued me. This is a trivia game that looks like it would be a blast. How many times have you played Trivia Pursuit and knew the answer, but because it wasn’t your turn to play, you had to just sit there. With Smart Ass you can yell out the answer whether it’s your turn or not. This game has 490 questions to answer. In 2007 it was nominated for game of the year. Sounds like this one would be a hit at my house.

All the interesting facts and history of the game of Scrabble can be found here on Wikipedia.

Scrabble

I've been playing Scrabble for longer than I care to admit. Most of my family members groan and moan when I bring this game out because I am the family champ. We have one of the older versions of this board game and after seeing the Diamond Anniversary Scrabble Game, I think it’s time for out with the old and in with the new. The board in this version rotates, the letters sit in a raised grid, and the board folds up turning into a carrying case. There are also two nifty little drawers that pull out to hold your letters and curved letter racks.

Angry Birds Knock On Wood

Angry Birds

How many of us have played this game online or on our Smartphones? Now you can play this addictive game right on your kitchen table. You play this board game with cards, building blocks, egg stealing pigs, and of course the angry birds with a sling shot. This game is for two or four players. Although this game is for children, I think a lot of adults will enjoy it too.

Susan - I have Smart Ass!!! It is a blast to play! I bet you are surprised I have that:)

I know it is called smart ass but it is for kids like 12 and up? It is very kid friendly. There are 3 types of cards - What am I? Who am I? and Where am I? It gives you a clue and anyone can shout out the answer but if you are wrong you are out. If not - another clue is read. You can land on dumb ass spaces or kick ass. The kids love it and they learn so much without even realizing it. It is all trivia and some of the answers are cartoons or childrens shows:) Sorry I was going on but it is such a fun game!

I am a board game addict... I have filled all my husband's cupboards in the garage with my massive collection! I will have to try Smart Ass but I hate trivia games!

Lydie, No you don't. We're only as old as we feel. There's only 2 years difference in age between you and I.

RH, I should have guessed that you'd have this game :) It sure looks like a lot of fun. I think my nieces and nephews would get a big kick out of Smart Ass.

barbergirl, To me it isn't Christmas without playing a few games over the holiday season.

Hi, Susan - 'Smart Ass' is what I hear all the time - sometimes even when I play that game. It IS fun for the whole family. Loved your layout - so crisp. neat and easy to read.

I like these Ideas and they do not have to be merely for Christmas gifts but can be given all year around regardless of whether there is a special occassion or not

drbj, You a "Smart Ass", I cannot imagine that. Thanks, glad you liked this :)

Snurre, Thanks, I play scrabble on Facebook all the time. A little addiction of mine.

Dave, That is true these make great gifts at anytime of the year. Unfortunately my husband hates to play board games and so it seems at my house the only time I get to play is when I cook a Family Christmas dinner and everyone is here.

I love board games. In fact, everyone in my family doe. I'm going to spend Christmas in Austin with my daughter and her SO. I'm considering bringing Smart Ass as a gift for the two of them.

alekhouse, I am leaning towards that one myself this Christmas. Especially after the rave review RealHousewife gave.

Ruby, A Scrabble club is something I would like to find. I've belonged to Euchre clubs in the past and those were a lot of fun.

What a nice little hub. I like board games. I have Scrabble.

Do you remember the old games. A long time ago I had Chutes and Latters, Sorry, and Boggle.

My family likes card games more though; especially Canasta.

Card games or board games. It brings people together.

Daffy, Oh yes I remember all of those games. I like to play cards. Have you ever played Euchre ? Games do bring people together and are so much fun.

Hi Susan,

My family also plays board games after holiday meals. It's about the only time we do. I've got to check out SmartAss, sounds like fun. Thanks,

Sharyn

Sharyn, Board games are usually only played after dinner at Christmas here too. If we have the nieces and nephews over on New Years Eve the Monopoly or Risk game always comes out. I think SmartAss looks like so much fun.

Cassy, Now that my sons are all grown, we only seem to play board games when we all get together for a Sunday meal or on holidays.
