Don't Drive and Talk On Your Phone While Driving

By Just Ask Susan

We should all know by now how dangerous it is to use a cell phone while driving. Talking to someone on your cell with the phone up to your ear can distract you from what you are doing, which should be concentrating on your driving. If your phone rings, let it ring, you can call the person back when you either pull over somewhere, or when you get to your destination. Emergency and high important callers will call back or leave a message for you.

There’s nothing scarier than to see a woman or man with a pile of children in the vehicle talking on the cell phone. Besides the fact that it is illegal in most states and provinces across North America, people are still chatting up a storm. Your reaction time is much slower while driving and talking making you a prime candidate to get into an accident.

Hands free cell phones may be a better option for people that must talk while driving. Making a call should be only done when one has voice dialing, as dialing a number is just or more dangerous than talking while you are driving

Using your cell phone to text while driving is totally insane and people that do this are just looking for trouble.

There have been studies done with the conclusion that driving drunk is less fatal than driving and talking or texting on your cell phone. Not that it is all right to do either one.

Automobile deaths caused by cell phones and by texting have caused so many deaths. If you are a phone addict and cannot live without your phone, put it in the trunk while you are driving. Arrive alive don’t talk, text or drink and drive.

Great article. Something definitely needs to be done to stop drivers from texting, it's a huge problem.

Love this hub! I just got an iPhone 4 and LOVE IT. It has a great speaker phone, so hands free! No klunky ear device (although it is bluetooth ready) but I can talk like I would if someone else was in the car with me. But it drives me bonkers to see someone weaving all over, only to pull up next to them and see they're texting. I heard a truck driver got fired for it. Lost a great job for a stupid text! If it's an emergency then pull over to text or call I think! I'm guilty of doing it until I realized I went over the line once, since then I haven't.. and now with my new phone, no more worries! Great hub everyone should read it! :)

Katharella thanks so much. In Toronto there were a number of City bus drivers a few months back that got in quite a bit of trouble due to texting. A passenger on the bus got either a video or pictures of the driver texting and driving. Thanks so much for reading.

Prettydarkhorse I totally agree.

Great advice, Susan. I only hope your advice will be heeded. So many people I know use their drive time (in heavy traffic) for talk time on their cell phones. This means they aren't paying close enough attention to their driving, of course. Even talking hands-free with earbuds keeps a driver from giving full attention to his or her driving. It certainly makes "defensive driving" more difficult.

Even crazier are those who text while behind the steering wheel, as it takes even more concentration to type in abbreviations. Those who text seem to be addicted to it. JAYE

JAYNE It amazes me how many people I still see talking on their cell phones and some that still text as well. You would think by now with all the accidents and tickets that the police have handed out that it would be next to nil. Hopefully someday people will actually stop. Thanks so much for reading and for your comments.

Excellent advice! I am a very defensive driver - always on the lookout for the texters. Also what the heck is texting going to do for the English Language? It makes me shudder.

RIGHT ON! It makes me really angry to see people out on the highway risking the life and safety of themselves and others (including myself and my family!) because they can't stay off the phone. How many close calls we have had which would have been accidents if I were not paying close attention to everything. They change lanes right on top of you (without even knowing they did it!) They run off the road and back on.... Stay off that ohone if you are going to drive! ;0)

RH and MysteryPlanet, I just recently heard on the news that here in Ontario they are going to start pulling people over for other incidents other than just cell phones. Not really sure how much it will be enforced but the plan is to pull over drivers that are fiddling with their radios, putting in a CD and I hope they pull over the women that are applying makeup when they drive too.

Thanks for reading :)

Definitely a great point you make, Susan. It is illegal across the UK and carries a fixed penalty fine. I'm not sure what the fine is at the moment but I know there is a lot of talk about incresing the penalty.

It is not just phones, as you rightly point out, however, which can cause the problem. I remember (best part of twenty years ago) a service engineer coming in to the office where I worked at the time and telling me that he had been pulled over by the police for eating an apple while driving. He had indignantly asked the police officer if he would have been pulled over for smoking. The policeman told him that if he had been smoking an apple, he certainly would. That sounds like a joke - it's not, I promise! It's an absolutely true story.

Gordon, I believe the fine here for talking or texting on a cell phone while you are driving starts at $60.00 Canadian and can go up to $500.00. So many people do eat in their vehicles. I am guilty of drinking a coffee while driving, but I will have to stop doing that since they are going to be handing out fines for that one too.

Susan - off topic but I told Maddy and Syd about this (they both have cells and text a lot) when Maddy found out you live in Canada - she lit up and said, "does she know Justin Bieber?" lol!

RH That's cute. I have written many articles on Justin Bieber for a website..not my own though. I'll send you the link for it if you like.
